1859-D<G$1> MS64 PCGS. Variety 11-N, the 9 in the date is centered below the left edge of the A in DOLLAR. From 1854 through the outbreak of the Civil War, the Dahlonega Mint's yearly output of Gold Dollars failed to reach 5,000 coins. The 1859-D has one of the more generous deliveries of this era. Nevertheless, only 4,952 pieces were produced, and it is a rare occasion when a Mint State survivor is offered. Indeed, PCGS and NGC have certified about 60 Mint State specimens (many of which are undoubtedly resubmissions), and the vast majority of these are in the lower Uncirculated grades of MS60 to MS62.
The major devices are well struck on the honey-gold near-Gem offered in this lot and the borders are also crisp. Only the 5 in the date and the OLL in DOLLAR are not fully impressed, which is characteristic of the denomination since these letters are opposite the center of the high relief portrait. The shimmering fields are pleasantly unabraded, and the eye appeal is undeniable. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (8/05).
