1859-D G$1 MS64 NGC. Winter 11-M, the only known dies. From 1854 through the outbreak of the Civil War, the Dahlonega Mint's yearly output of Gold Dollars failed to reach 5,000 coins. The 1859-D has one of the more generous deliveries of this era. Nevertheless, only 4,952 pieces were produced, and it is a rare occasion when a survivor that grades finer than AU50 is offered. Perhaps needless to say, Mint State examples are even rarer, and Winter (1997) estimates that no more than 12 examples are extant at or above the MS60 level. The present near-Gem is the only so graded at NGC and PCGS. Surprisingly, there is also a single MS65 representative reported at NGC (10/02). Although we have not seen that coin, we do not hesitate to state that it would have a difficult time competing with the technical merits of this Ashland City specimen. We doubt whether a more sharply struck '59-D Gold Dollar exists. Virtually all of Liberty's hair curls are distinct, the I and C in AMERICA are free of the softness often seen on examples of this date, and the reverse ribbon knot and bow display emerging detail. The only areas of mentionable bluntness are the lower obverse border, where the denticles are a little indistinct, and the central reverse, where the OLL in DOLLAR and the 5 in the date are blurry. Struck on a remarkably problem-free planchet, the surfaces are typically subdued for the issue, yet possessed of pleasing orange-gold color that enhances the already impressive eye appeal. A few freckles of copper iridescence in the obverse field below the end of Liberty's bust, a circular planchet void (as struck) on the same side before the O in OF, and a reverse planchet flaw (also as struck) in the field above the R in DOLLAR were invaluable in helping us trace the pedigree of this impressive D-mint rarity.Ex: 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale--The Chestatee Collection (Heritage, 8/1999), lot 7631.From the Ashland City Collection.
