1859-D G$1 MS64 NGC. Variety 11-N, one
1859-D<G$1> MS64 NGC. Variety 11-N, one of two reverse dies known for this rare issue. The N reverse has a higher date than on the other variety of this year, with the 9 under the left foot of the A in DOLLAR. This is a late die state, with unusual clash marks on the reverse from 7 to 8 o'clock. Other clash marks, which are more typical for this issue, can be seen around the bust and in the center of the reverse.
This is a very well struck coin for the issue. On the obverse, most of the hair is clearly visible and the border is also nicely defined. The reverse has some minor weakness on the 85 in the date and the OLL in DOLLAR, while the border is sharp. The surfaces are reasonably clean, with a few faint light scratches visible below the bust, but these can only be seen when the coin is tilted into a light source. More noticeable, and serving as clear identification, are a shallow curved lintmark on the lower portion of Liberty's cheek and a small Mint-made lamination located in the same general area. The luster is frosty and undisturbed, while the coloration is a natural light to medium rose-gold, with some greenish tinges in the right obverse field. This coin is essentially a Gem, but it has obviously been net graded on account of the above-mentioned lamination on the cheek. This is the second finest 1859-D gold dollar on the Condition Census, trailing only the Green Pond: 1012 coin. It is the second finest graded at NGC (exceeded only by a single MS65 coin, a coin that we are unaware of), and none have been graded higher than this piece at PCGS.
By the standards of Dahlonega gold dollars, the 1859-D is a relatively common issue in higher grades. There may be as many as 20 pieces known in Uncirculated, including a few reasonably choice examples.
Ex: Stack's (10/90), lot 1010; Steve Contursi; Dr. Richard Appel; Heritage (11/92); Superior (1/93), lot 1272; Leon Farmer Collection; Hancock and Harwell.
