1859-D $5 PCGS MS64 [L#1409
Bright and lustrous honey gold with much yellow brilliance in the recessed areas, almost prooflike in its radiance. A nicely struck example of the date with 11 of 13 obverse star radials complete along with sharp hair details, just a hint of striking weakness on the reverse at the eagle's neck feathers. Its mintage of 10,366 pieces gives this date the second lowest mintage figure in the Dahlonega Mint half eagle series, with just the greatly prized 1861-D (mintage: 1,597) rarity struck in a smaller quantity than 1859-D. The Winter reference on the Dahlonega Mint notes: "This is a difficult issue to locate with good appeal on account of weakness of strike, mint-made planchet problems, and heavy abrasions. The few really choice 1859-D half eagles in existence are off the market and years can go by without a genuinely appealing piece being offered for sale." Fortunately for our clients, the present specimen is sharp and bursting with eye appeal for the assigned grade. A whole lot of half eagle for "only" MS-63.
