1859-D $5 Liberty. Med D PCGS MS62
1859-D $5 Liberty. Medium D. PCGS graded MS62. With only 10,366 pieces struck, the 1859-D has the second lowest mintage of any Dahlonega half eagle. As such, it is a fairly scarce coin in all grades and is usually found in Extremely Fine. This specimen has the often seen below average strike on the eagle from worn dies. However some are far less detailed than this. The obverse, by comparison, is sharp except for the braid below the coronet and the lovelock curl on the neck, which is flat at its center. As on all 1859-D half eagles, there is some beveling noted on the edges. Still and all, it is a splendid, lustrous coin. The frost on these tends to be somewhat more grainy texture in the protected areas. Most examples show poor luster, making this piece above average in this respect.
