1859-D $5 Large D MS63 PCGS. Variety 37-EE. A sca
1859-D<$5> Large D MS63 PCGS. Variety 37-EE. A scarce and relatively newly discovered variety that was first publicized in Bass II. Time will tell how difficult this variety actually is, but one thing is for certain: this piece is certain to rank among the finest known of the variety, if it is not the finest known. Which leads into the absolute as well as condition rarity of this issue. Only 10,366 pieces were struck of all three varieties of 1859-D half eagles, and probably no more than 10 separate pieces are known in the various grades from MS60 through MS64. This piece ranks along with three other pieces as the second finest certified with three other coins tied for finest certified at the MS64 level. While the '59-D is "invariably weak in the centers" this piece is among the strongest strikes one could expect for this date. Only slight softness is noted on the hair curls of Liberty and the eagle's plumage. The mint luster and color on this coin are truly a delight to behold. The mint luster is soft and frosted and give extra vibrancy to the rich reddish-golden color seen over each side. Light, numerous abrasions are scattered over both obverse and reverse, as one would expect for the grade, with the most obvious mark located in the upper reverse field below OF. A remarkable, high grade example of this important, late date Dahlonega half eagle.
