1859-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS.
1859-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 21-M. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The only dies used this year. Reverse of 1850-1859.RARITY INFORMATION: This popular final year of issue Dahlonega quarter eagle has an original mintage of only 2,244 coins. There are an estimated 120-140 pieces known, with most of these in the XF40 to AU53 grade range. The 1859-D is very rare in Uncirculated with an estimated five or six pieces known. The finest is a PCGS MS62 in the Duke's Creek Collection. The Green Pond coin, graded MS62 by PCGS, is the second finest and it is trailed by a single NGC MS62 and three coins graded MS61 at PCGS.STRIKE: The 1859-D is one of the better struck Dahlonega quarter eagles from the 1850s, and the Green Pond Collection example shows a bold, even impression. The obverse has a slight bit of weakness in the center, but full radial lines on each of the stars, and sharp denticles. There is some weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg and right (facing) claw with the rest of the detail quite well defined.SURFACES: Some light hairlines (not from cleaning) can be seen on both sides, as expected from a coin of this grade. There is some slight haziness which could be removed without hurting the luster.LUSTER: This coin has very good luster. Both the obverse and the reverse are frosty with a slightly grainy texture.COLORATION: Bright orange-gold color can be seen on both the obverse and the reverse.EYE APPEAL: This 1859-D quarter eagle shows a good strike and luster with no serious marks and vivid orange-gold color. It does not show any of the mint-caused problems that are often seen on this issue.COMPARABLES: In our 2002 FUN Auction we sold an NGC MS62 as lot 7998 for $18,400.PEDIGREE: Ex: North Georgia Collection/1999 FUN Sale (Heritage,8/99), lot 7661, where it sold for $21,850; Doug Winter; New York Gold Mart; James A.
