1859-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 21-M as always for this date. Not only is this a low mintage date with a production of just 2,244 coins, it is also the last quarter eagle issue that was ever coined at the Dahlonega Mint. This combination of factors makes the date a popular one with collectors. Despite the low mintage, quite a few attractive AU pieces and a few lower grade Mint State coins are known, but this MS62 example is tied for the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS.
All of the design motifs on both sides are sharply detailed, save for the eagle's right facing leg and left claw. Typical of most, it has brilliant yellow-gold color with satiny surfaces and a hint of reflectivity in the fields on each side. A few faint imperfections, including some tiny hairlines and other minor marks, prevent a higher grade.
This is only the fourth time that we have offered an MS62 grade example of the date, and only the second such piece certified by PCGS. In the second edition (2003) of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, Doug Winter recorded nine different Mint State coins ranging from MS60 to MS62. His Census includes the following:

1. Duke's Creek Collection. MS62 PCGS.
2. Green Pond Collection. MS62 PCGS.
3. Heritage (1/2002), lot 7998. MS62 NGC.
4. Kansas Collection. MS61 PCGS.
5. Ashland City Collection. MS61 PCGS.
6. Chestatee Collection. MS61 PCGS.
7. Ashland City Collection duplicate. MS61 NGC.
8. Mid-American (5/1987), lot 1204. MS60 PCGS.
9. A second coin graded MS60 PCGS.

Our attempt to match this piece to any of the coins listed above has proven unsuccessful. Unless it is the number nine example in the list above (unlikely), it is a previously unknown example, and ranks in the top four based on grade. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the advanced Liberty quarter eagle or Dahlonega gold collector. Population: 3 in 62, 0 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
