1859-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Winter 21-L. The final year of Quarter Eagle production at the Dahlonega Mint and a sought-after issue of just 2,244 pieces. The 1859-D, like the 1857-D, is perhaps not as difficult as the tiny mintage would suggest. Many of the known examples are concentrated in the XF and AU grade range, but Mint State coins are of the utmost rarity and desirability. The typical 1859-D Quarter Eagle is hampered by planchet laminations and grease stains. This highly lustrous example is much above-average in that respect, displaying rich golden coloration, strong definition on all but the eagle's left leg feathers and right talons, and scattered spotting on the reverse. One of two Mint State examples in this impressive collection and easily Condition Census. Population: 3 in 61, 2 finer (10/02). From the Ashland City Collection.
