<B>1859 Charleston PORTER Slave Hire Badge. Number 766.</B></I> A nearly flat diamond-shaped tag with a hole for suspension, 53mm x 53mm. No hallmark, but likely made by W. B. Veronee, a local tinsmith. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch ("ON" affected by corrosion); "PORTER" in a rectangular bar punch; an incuse "766" in individual punches ("7" affected by corrosion); and "1859" bar punched. Appearance is fine with a green patina. There are some areas of corrosion affecting the elements as noted above with only one pinhole-sized hole at the "N" in "Charleston". <BR><BR>The badges for 1859, of which an estimated 4235 were made, were the first badges since 1826 with the occupation appearing as the second line of text. This badge is as issued by Veronee- without the corners clipped.
