1859 CALIFORNIA LIFE ILLUSTRATED
1859-Dated Gold Rush Era, First Edition Book entitled, “California Life Illustrate,” by William Taylor, published for The Author, Fine.
In 1859 “Thirteenth” Thousand bound in publisher’s cloth with gilt spine lettering. It includes (16) Engravings with full page plates by various artists. Interesting period pictures include: San Francisco, Sutter’s Mill, San Francisco in 1849, Oakland, Sacramento, Steam ship, Hanging of Jenkins, Chinese females and others. One has a handwritten note inked on the back, “September 27th, 1865 The morning is chilley With no fire in the Stove it feels uncomfortable to Sit in Ward O.” This possibly by an early traveler. Covers are lightly rubbed and shelf-worn, a little expected spine ends wear, remnants of a book plate on front paste-down, early names inked on front free end paper. Interior is tight and clean on this historic, very scarce early California, illustrated Gold Rush era book.
