1859-C[G$1] MS63 PCGS.
1859-C<G$1> MS63 PCGS. Variety 11-M, the only known dies. The final Gold Dollar issue produced in the Charlotte Mint, the 1859-C boasts a paltry original mintage of 5,235 pieces. It is one of the rarest C-mint Gold Dollars, although Winter's estimate of three or four Mint State coins extant is probably a bit on the low side. Nevertheless, it is an event of great importance when an Uncirculated '59-C appears in one of our auctions. This is one of the finest examples known to PCGS and NGC, and it is also among the finest 1859-C Dollars extant. As one might expect for a low mintage delivery, the surfaces exhibit a modest semi-prooflike finish. WInter does note that the 1859-C is equally as poorly made as the 1855-C, but the present example is actually quite bold over the obverse portrait and the reverse wreath. We do, however, note some softness of detail around the obverse periphery and in the center of the reverse, but all digits in the date are easily discernible. Rose-gold highlights decorate the otherwise green-gold surfaces. There are no singularly bothersome abrasions, but a pair of as-struck planchet flaws (on the obverse before Liberty's brow and in the reverse field at the LL in DOLLAR) are mentioned for pedigree purposes. In AU and Mint State grades, the 1859-C is surpassed in rarity by only the 1855-C and 1849-C Open Wreath among Charlotte Mint Gold Dollars. NGC and PCGS Population: 3 in 63, with none finer (3/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
