1859 $20 AU58 NGC. The combination of a low mintage and contemporary undesirability make the 1859 an important rarity today. Just 43,597 pieces were struck, the lowest mintage of any Type One double eagle coined in Philadelphia. At the time it was struck, collectors preferred proof coins when they were available, and the 80 proofs coined were available at such a modest premium over 20 dollars that it made little sense to collect anything different. Original pink and honey-gold color with traces of darker patina and reflective surfaces are all evident on this near-Mint example. Census: 24 in 58, 6 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
