1859 $20 AU55 NGC.<p>With a mintage figure of 43,597 circulation strikes, the 1859 has the lowest production figure of any Type One Liberty Head Double Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. It is among the most difficult Type One issues to locate with good eye appeal as the typical survivor shows extremely heavy abrasions and negative eye appeal. There are an estimated 60-70 pieces known in About Uncirculated and most are at the low end of this range. The 1859 Double Eagle is a rarity in AU55 and AU58 and it is extremely rare in full Uncirculated with around four to six examples known. We do not know of any specimen finer than MS61. This piece is bright and generally well struck. The rich greenish-gold coloration shows distinctive accents of deep reddish-coppery color around the devices and in the reverse fields. The only mentionable abrasion is a long angling mark in the field just below Liberty's nose. A slight design change occurred on Double Eagles beginning with this issue. A new obverse hub was employed that showed the designer's initials further to the left on the truncation of the bust. Additionally, the truncation was made more curved and the curls around the bun and below Liberty's ear were slightly modified.
