1859<$20> AU55 NGC. Breen-7195. Double-Punched 18. A new coinage hub was introduced for the obverse design in 1859. Two characteristics easily distinguish the new hub. First, the old hub in use since 1850 had the Y of LIBERTY doubled inside its upper left arm. The new hub has this letter normally formed. Second, Longacre's JBL initials have been repositioned. The old hub had these initials at the right end of the neck truncation, almost entirely below the hair curl at the base of the neck. The new hub has these letters moved almost to the center of the neck truncation, and almost entirely out from underneath the hair curl. Liberty's lips and nose on the new hub appear to have slightly more delicate features.
The 1859 double eagle is a surprisingly scarce coin from a limited mintage of just 43,517 coins, the lowest mintage of any regular issue Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. The central obverse and reverse devices are sharply defined, although the peripheral design elements are generally quite weak. Aside from its brilliant luster and excellent yellow-gold color, the surface quality is one of the important aspects of this particular example. Keep the buying tips of Winter and Crum in mind when you view this piece: "The ultra-finicky collector will have to relax his standards when looking at 1859 double eagles. It is exceptionally hard to locate an example with even average quality eye appeal, due to the fact that so many are extensively abraded." Although a few wispy hairlines are evident, this example has far above average aesthetic appeal.
From The Wyoming Collection.
