1859 $20 AU50 PCGS. Breen-7195. Only 43,597 double eagle business strikes were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1859, the lowest production at the facility between 1850 and 1880. A lemon-gold example that is well struck aside from the right obverse stars. The obverse field has wispy slide marks appropriate for the grade. The 18 in the date is recut south. 1859 was the first year of the new obverse hub, which, among other cosmetic changes, removed the recutting on the Y in LIBERTY that was present on all earlier dated double eagles. Struck from rotated dies.

Coin Engraver: James B.
