1859 $2 1/2 Old Reverse, Type One MS64 PCGS. Highly lustrous with strong central details beneath a coating of attractive reddish patina. The Old Reverse hub of the Liberty quarter eagle was introduced along with the type in 1840. This hub is identifiable by the close proximity of the lowest arrowhead to the CA in AMERICA and the closed talons on the eagle. Although replaced by a new reverse hub in 1859, the Old Reverse hub continued in use, albeit in a limited fashion, through 1861. Only a few dozen Mint State pieces survive of this long-overlooked variety and, at the MS64 level, it is among the finer examples known. Population: 3 in 64, 0 finer (3/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
