1859 $2 1/2 New Reverse, Type Two MS66 PCGS. The Type Two reverse with smaller arrowheads and letters was introduced in 1859, although quarter eagles were occasionally struck from the old-style hub (first used in 1840), from 1859 through 1861 (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006). The 1859 is a low mintage issue with only 39,364 pieces produced, the lowest P-mint mintage from the 1850s. This is an astonishingly well preserved coin. The most dominant feature is the thick mint frost that covers each side. This frosted finish is also accented by a noticeable overlay of reddish patina, undoubtedly the source of the gold alloy having a higher copper content than silver. Sharply struck throughout. The only mentionable marks on either side are a couple of abrasions in the left obverse field. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
