1859 1C MS65 PCGS. The second design in the U.S. small Cent series, the so-called Indian Head actually displays a representation of Liberty wearing a feathered headdress. With a sizeable original mintage of 36 million business strikes, the 1859 is anything but rare in an absolute sense. Survivors, however, are always in demand among type collectors because they are the only Indian Cents with a laurel wreath on the reverse. What's more, this issue is difficult to locate in the finer Mint State grades, particularly if one demands sharp striking definition and strong eye appeal. The present Gem is uncommonly well produced with noteworthy crispness of detail in virtually all areas. We do note, however, that the date and the tops of some of the letters in the obverse legend are a little soft. Lovely pinkish-tan color and fulsome mint luster shimmer over both sides, and select angles reveal modest brightness in the fields that enhances the already impressive visual appearance.
