<B>1859<1C> MS65 NGC.</B></I> Snow-3. This variety is most easily distinguished by the repunched 1 below the center of the dominant 1.<BR> After large cents were mostly withdrawn from circulation, by 1859 there were still enough copper-nickel cents available in the marketplace to create a glut. As Rick Snow relates in his 1859-1869 book on Indian cents: "Merchants resorted to bundling them up in 25, 50 and 100 piece bags to creatively make change and move them at the same time."<BR> This Gem example has slightly muted surfaces with the original gray-tan surfaces showing an overlay of light brown. Sharply struck with no obvious marks on either side.
