1859<1C> Indian Cent--Deep Obverse Die Cap--MS64 PCGS. A remarkable die cap of this one-year No Shield type. This coin stuck to the obverse die after its initial blow from the dies, then was struck several additional times against a series of newly fed planchets. The force of the additional strikes partly wrapped the coin around the obverse die. The obverse is needle-sharp, except at the borders, which exhibit heavy flowlines. The reverse continues to display the design delivered by the reverse die from the first strike, although additional strikes against planchets have spread and distorted the design and reduced its relief. The numismatic significance of this mint error must have been recognized even at the time it was coined, since the piece is unabraded and retains its original "bottle cap" shape. Minute obverse carbon is all that limits this grade of this medium autumn-brown near-Gem.
