1859 10C PR67 Deep Cameo NGC.
1859 10C PR67 Deep Cameo NGC.<p>The Philadelphia Mint produced its last Stars Obverse Seated Dimes in 1859. A not insignificant total of 430,000 pieces flowed from the coinage presses, 800 coins of which were proofs. While the number of specimen pieces produced is significant for the decade, Breen (1988) notes that many were either melted as unsold or spent during the tumultuous years of the Civil War. Still, less discerning collectors will have little trouble locating a noticeably hairlined representative, but carefully preserved Gems are anything but common. We now come to this radiant Superb Gem, which is definitely in a class all its own. First, the surfaces are free of any toning that would inhibit one's appreciation of the breathtaking finish. Second, there are no grade-limiting hairlines or contact marks on either side. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, both sides combine thickly frosted devices and unfathomably deep fields to present striking cameo contrast. A tiny area of shallow planchet voids (as produced) in the reverse field below the I in DIME is the only mentionable pedigree marker. This coin was probably one of the first proofs produced with this die marriage, and it is easily the most beautiful proof 1859 Seated Dime that this cataloger has seen.
