<Our item number 140057>1858 Whaling Letter From Honolulu. Autograph letter on blue paper from James B. Robinson to Capt. H. W. Seabury in New Bedford, Mass., 10¾ x 8½ in., Honolulu, 1858, April 6, 1½ pp. Describing a voyage on the whaling ship Tahmaroo. In part: "Our cruise out south was unsuccessful. The whales were very scarce and shy. We left the 'New Zealand Ground'. and started for the 'Off Shore' where we cruised a month and took 84 Bbls sperm oil. Should have taken more… but unfortunately saw the whales to windward every time we raised them… The loss of the ship 'South Seaman' was very unexpected. The vessels that whaled on the coast of California last season done extremely well…quite a large fleet of whalers at the 'Islands' this spring. [will] continue on the voyage on my old cruising grounds." He appreciates Seabury's high opinion of his ship and crew and says he'll "try to merit the good opinion of our liberal minded o wners in the future." Very good; few edge chips.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Our item number 140057
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
