Until 1856, the one cent coins produced by the U.S. were big bulky affairs known today as "large cents".  In 1856, the mint experimented with a new, much smaller coin, made partially of nickel.  A single specimen was given to each member of Congress, and a few extras were also produced.  Those foolish enough to have spent their penny would, if alive today, regret this, as the 1856 one cent coin is worth five figures even in poor production.  The so called "Flying Eagle" cent was minted in 1957 (along with some large cents), and then again in 1856, before the famous "Indian Head" penny commenced production.
