1858-S 50C MS66 NGC. This is the Large Mintmark v
1858-S<50C> MS66 NGC. This is the Large Mintmark variety, and on this reverse the mintmark is placed high in the field, with the upper right serif lightly touching the stem. Although seven different reverse dies are mentioned by Wiley and Bugert, only one major variety listing is identified in their reference. All 1858-S half dollars are rare in Mint State grades, and Gem quality coins are exceedingly rare. In fact, this is the only example of the date to be certified in MS66 grade with none finer. Likewise, PCGS has graded a single MS66 example, also with none finer. This example is fully struck with complete design details on both sides. The surfaces are brilliant light gray with satiny luster. A couple small splashes of iridescent toning are visible on the reverse. A few minor die cracks are seen on both sides of this intermediate die state example. Population: 1 in 66, 0 finer (2/05).
