<B>1858-S $5 AU58 NGC.</B></I> The 1858-S, with its original mintage of 18,600 pieces, poses an interesting challenge to the collector of Liberty half eagles. Neither NGC nor PCGS has certified a Mint State example of this issue, and so an AU58 coin such as the present piece is the best a collector can obtain (6/07). The prospective purchaser with an otherwise Mint State set should take a close look at this terrific example, which appears unworn at first glance. Only gradually does one identify small zones of friction on the highpoints. The lemon-gold surfaces have strong, shining luster, and the well-defined devices have few marks aside from a small scrape on the cheek. Though light abrasions pepper the fields, these flaws are trivial individually and have little impact on the overall appearance of the piece.
