1858-S<$20> XF45 PCGS. This coin is interesting for a number of reasons: first, unlike the 1857-S issue and some others, it has not seen increased availability because of the discoveries of underwater coin caches. Secondly, this piece appears to have a Large S mintmark, larger than normally seen on this issue. The Breen Medium S mintmark listed in that reference is 1.3 mm, and this, as measured through the plastic slab, appears to be 1.6 or 1.7 mm, like on the 1857-S Large S pieces, which Breen calls "Very rare." Thirdly, the last 8 is punched low and tilted to the right. Despite Bowers' comment in his double eagle reference, "Standard four-digit logotype punch for this year," this appears to be evidence that a three-digit date logotype was used, with the final year digit being punched in by hand. This piece shows attractive, still somewhat lustrous honey-gold surfaces, complemented by a few scattered, undistracting abrasions that are consistent with the Choice XF grade.
