1858-S $20 AU55 PCGS. "Not surprisingly, most of the 1858-S double eagles seen are low grade and heavily abraded, as the issue saw heavy commercial use," according to Garrett and Guth (2006). This piece shows the typical extensive abrasions, but is also quite attractive by virtue of considerable luster and deep rose-gold toning. The design elements are crisply struck on both sides. A brief coppery streak is noted on Liberty's cheek, close to the hair. Population: 37 in 55, 51 finer (11/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
