1858-S 10C MS63 PCGS. A near twin to the Eliasber
1858-S<10C> MS63 PCGS. A near twin to the Eliasberg coin that we sold in the October, 2001 Long Beach Signature Auction for $10,695. The similarity in toning on these two Condition Census pieces suggests that they may have been kept together during the 19th century before the advancement of mintmark collecting caused them to part ways. This well defined example is bathed in mottled olive-gold toning and shows only a few inoffensive abrasions. Two small, darker toning spots are noted on Liberty's shield, a solid attribution marker. The 1858-S is only the second Dime issue produced at the San Francisco Mint, one of just 60,000 pieces struck. They are legitimately scarce in all grades and only a handful of Uncirculated pieces are known. Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (6/05).
