1858-S $10 AU58 NGC. According to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, "The 1858-S is a low-mintage, low-population coin that has proven to be a resilient rarity over the past two decades. While the populations of other dates have swelled, that of the 1858-S issue has remained small, creating a new appreciation for this date. It is nearly as rare as the much more highly regarded 1858 eagle, but unlike the 1858, no Mint State examples of the 1858-S are known." The NGC/PCGS population data bear this out, as the AU58 specimen we offer here is one of only 12 such coins certified, all by NGC; no finer coins have been seen by either service, as of (7/07). Yellow-gold surfaces are tinted with light tan-red, and exhibit ample residual luster, and nice definition is noted on the design elements. Some minor marks are evenly scattered over each side, but none are worthy of individual mention. The gold specialist does not want to miss out on the chance to acquire one of the finest-known 1858-S eagles.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
