1858-S<$10> AU58 NGC. The 1858-S Liberty eagle is of sufficient rarity that it is, in fact, comparable to the much better known P-mint issue from this year. Only 11,800 pieces were struck. In 1980, David Akers rated the '58-S in the top 10% of the entire series in terms of rarity, according to frequency of auction appearances. The surfaces on this piece display light orange-gold coloration, with faint greenish accents. A bit softly struck on the obverse stars, the coin is only slightly abraded, and there are substantial portions of mint frost on each side. Not a single example has been certified in Mint State, by either of the major grading services, making this high-end AU58 specimen a significant offering in the numismatic marketplace. Census: 11 in 58, 0 finer (8/06).
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
