1858<S$1> PR65 Cameo NGC. Among Seated Liberty Dollars, the 1858-date is the only Proof-Only issue, and a certain mystery surrounds its production. We do not know exactly how many were originally struck, nor do we know how many coinage dies were used. For many years it was reported and believed that only 80 coins were struck. In his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers summed up the claims of just 80 coins: "Apparently, it was the Chapman Brothers, S. Hudson and Henry, precocious rare coin dealers of Philadelphia, who stated that sources within the Mint, possibly Patterson DuBois, gave the figure as 80 coins. However, expecting Mint officials to give factual information on the subject, especially if the same officials had been party to restriking additional pieces, was a hope of the most naive nature." More recent estimates have suggested that 200 to 300 pieces were coined. Doug Winter suggested that 60 to 100 pieces survive to this day, while another numismatist suggested that over 600 such pieces still survived today. Current numismatic thought suggests an actual mintage of about 300 coins, almost certainly including restrikes.
This is an impressive Gem Cameo Proof example with brilliant surfaces and hints of ivory and champagne color on the obverse. The reverse has deeper gold toning over contrasting fields and devices. Dave Bowers recorded two different varieties for this date, however, this example seems to share characteristics of both die combinations. Both are from the same obverse die. The reverse exhibits the following from Variety 1: Die rust appears on the L of DOL. and also on the border below that letter. From Variety 2: Die rust appears at the top of the upright of D in DOL.
