1858 S$1 PR62 PCGS. Among the most famous and wid
1858<S$1> PR62 PCGS. Among the most famous and widely recognized dates in the 1840-1873 Seated Dollar series, the 1858 was produced solely in proof format. Since federal records are silent on the number of coins produced, we may never know the original mintage of this date. Nevertheless, an estimate of 300+ pieces seems to be fashionable in most numismatic circles. This particular survivor was struck from the same reverse die that the Mint used to deliver some 1856 and 1857 proofs, and it is most readily identifiable by the presence of a prominent rust lump over the left base of the L in DOL. The otherwise golden tinged surfaces reveal blushes of pale copper-tan iridescence in select obverse field areas. Sparkling mint brilliance is readily evident as the surfaces rotate beneath the light. Scattered hairlines seem to explain the PR62 designation, and a circular reverse planchet flaw in the field before the eagle's beak is noted for pedigree purposes.
