1858 Press- Newspaper Lincoln-Douglas Debate
The Press - 1858 Philadelphia Newspaper with a front page report on the Lincoln-Douglas debates. The headlines at the top of column six in this August 26th issue read: "THE CAMPAIGN IN ILLINOIS. / Great Discussion Between Douglas and Lincoln. / Immense Enthusiasm. / The Little Giant Triumphant. / 20,000 People Present." This particular article is about the first (of seven) debates held between these two candidates for an Illinois seat in the U.S Senate. This session took place in Ottawa, Illinois on August 21. The format, which is now a standard among debate societies, was that one (alternating) candidate would speak for an hour, the second candidate would speak for 1 hours, wherein the first candidate was then allowed a hour response. These debates, mostly about the slavery issue, were closely followed; Lincoln published a book of the edited texts. Though Douglas won the Senate seat in 1858, he lost the presidency to Lincoln in 1860. This four page issue, 20.5" x 28" in size is in about fine condition with very light dampstaining. A very important historical paper.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
