1858-O<H10C> AU55 ANACS. V-5. This is the new variety described by Ahwash in the Valentine supplement and has been designated V-5. The ANACS holder is incorrectly labeled as V-3. Diagnostic die crack from the seventh star through Liberty's head, hand and hat to the ninth (not tenth as listed in supplement) star to rim. Die cracks on the reverse from the left stem end to rim, final A of AMERICA to rim and R to rim of that word. Significant die swelling on the lower right of the reverse, and the lowest section of the die seems to be breaking away below the stems. Light gray over luster and attractive. Identifiable by a tiny nick on Liberty's left thigh. A scarce die pairing as the reverse apparently broke apart after little use.
Ex: Norm Pullen (8/84).
From The William A.
