<B>1858-O $20 AU58 NGC.</B></I> The 1858-O double eagle, with a mintage of 35,250 coins, is considered to be of similar rarity to the 1857-O, that shows a mintage of 30,000 pieces. It is usually seen in Very Fine or Extremely Fine condition. Low-end AU examples are scarce, while AU55 and AU58 pieces are rare. Mint State specimens are nearly unobtainable; indeed, NGC and PCGS have seen only four 1858-O Uncirculated twenties, with MS62 being the highest.<BR> Rich peach-gold color adorns this AU58 example, and a solid strike manifests itself in excellent detail on the design features. While this issue is almost always very heavily abraded (Douglas Winter, <I>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint</B></I> (2006), this particular example reveals just the normal scattering of marks expected to be present on a large, heavy gold coin that has seen some circulation.
