1858-O $20 AU53 NGC. Ex: Bass. The majority of the 45-55 1858-O Double Eagles believed extant in AU grade either AU50 or AU53. While many survivors of this issue display evidence of striking incompleteness on the obverse over the date and the star centrils, this coin does not. The hair curls above Liberty's brow are also appreciably sharp for an example that saw actual circulation, however light. Both sides are green-gold in color with traces of original luster in the more protected areas around the devices that point to a semi-prooflike, if not fully prooflike finish. The surfaces are scuffy from handling with several moderate abrasions on the obverse. A cut at the top of Liberty's throat is the most useful pedigree marker. The 1858-O was produced to the extent of just 35,250 pieces. Writing in 1992, Doug Winter ranked this issue ninth in high grade (AU-Mint State) rarity among the 13 Liberty Double Eagle issues produced in the New Orleans Mint. It has been four years since we last offered a certified AU53 representative.Ex: Gilhousen Collection (Superior, 2/1973), lot 866; Harry W.
