1858 H10C Half Dime PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Only the Kaufman specimen has been certified as a Superb Gem by NGC, and it received the coveted S designation. Almost certainly the finest known example, destined to please the connoisseur.
Coin collecting was popularized by several events in the late 1850s and early 1860s. Mint Director James Ross Snowden opened sales of proof sets and coins to the general public. Several dealers became active full time professional numismatists, the American Numismatic Society was founded in New York, and popular numismatic references were published.
The date slants down to the right with the digit 1 closer to the base of Liberty, and the digit 8 nearly touching the border. The bottom of the 5 and both 8s have a soft and somewhat indefinite appearance. The shield point is over the left tip of the 1 and the skirt pendant is over the right edge of the 5. The reverse has a faint die file mark between IC.
Considerable contrast beneath a rainbow of iridescent toning provides amazing aesthetic appeal. The fields are deeply mirrored, especially on the reverse. The design elements, including the central motifs and borders, are bold and complete, except for slight weakness on a few stars. Census: 1 in 67 , 0 finer (6/07), the only proof 1858 half dime to be certified as PR67 by NGC.
From The Phil Kaufman Collection of Early Proof Sets, Part One. (#4437)

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
