1858<G$1> PR66 Cameo NGC. Perhaps without exception, every proof gold dollar struck prior to 1880 is an important rarity. Of course, the 1858 fits nicely into the category of gold rarities with possibly only a dozen or so examples known. In addition to the few known examples, there is also a pattern issue with larger obverse letters, engraved by Anthony Paquet. At least two similar examples have been graded by NGC, as the present sale offers bidders the opportunity to bid on both coins. While the NGC Census shows four examples certified as PR66 Cameo, we believe that these two are without equal. The pedigree of this lovely coin has alluded us, although it is not Trompeter, either Bass coin, Starr, or Pittman. It is obviously also not the Smithsonian coin or the ANS coin. A few tiny reverse planchet flakes may help identify this coin. They are located northeast of the R in DOLLAR, directly below the digit 8, and in the outer left field at about 9:30. The surfaces are deeply mirrored with excellent yellow-gold color. These reflective fields help frame the highly lustrous devices to create a splendid cameo appearance.
