1858 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Like most of the pre-188
1858 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Like most of the pre-1880 issues, the 1858 is a rare gold dollar in proof format. While 1858 marked the beginning of the modern era of proof coinage and lower denomination coins were struck in fairly large numbers, there were relatively few gold dollars produced. One researcher suggests that a list of survivors would number 10-12 pieces, including the ANS and Smithsonian coins. A search of our Auction Archives reveals that this is only the sixth time we have offered a Proof 1858 gold dollar in the last 12 years.
The surfaces of this piece display even golden-orange coloration. The devices show a significant amount of mint frost against the moderately reflective mirrors in the fields. Two identifying lint marks are located on the obverse: one below the first S in STATES and the other below the lowest feather in the headdress. A rare opportunity to acquire this important Type One gold dollar in proof format. Population: 1 in 65, 0 finer (1/05).
From The Mike Jacobson Collection. Lot:7537
