1858-D G$1 MS63 PCGS.
1858-D G$1 MS63 PCGS. Variety 10-M. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The only variety for the year. Heavy obverse lettering with the second S in STATES joined solid; the mintmark is large and well centered. Early die state.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1858-D is one of the two most obtainable Type Three gold dollars from this mint. There are 125-150 pieces believed known today and it is not really all that difficult to find an example in the About Uncirculated grade range. In Uncirculated, there are between 10 and 15 accurately graded 1858-D gold dollars. The PCGS and NGC population figures are greatly inflated by resubmissions. A few extremely choice pieces are known, including two Gems.STRIKE: The 1858-D is one of the few Dahlonega gold dollars that can be found with a good strike. This coin is especially bold with just about as sharp a strike as one is likely to find on a Type Three Dahlonega issue of this denomination. On the obverse, the hair is quite well detailed while the headdress is very well defined. There is some weakness on the R in AMERICA (which is common to the issue), while the rest of the lettering is fully squared. The reverse is fully struck with the date and mintmark very sharp and nearly complete denticles.SURFACES: The surfaces have some very light hairlines (not from cleaning), which are really only visible under magnification. The only distinguishing marks are a couple of shallow planchet depressions in the field below the ED in UNITED. Some very light clashmarks can be seen in the center of the reverse.LUSTER: The quality of luster is more suggestive of a Philadelphia gold dollar of this era than one from Dahlonega. It is rich and very frosty in texture. This issue is more available than nearly any other Dahlonega Type Three dollar with good luster but this piece is really a "blazer" and is very desirable as such.COLORATION: Medium orange-gold toning can be seen on both sides with the reverse being a bit deeper in hue than the obverse.EYE APPEAL: This is a very pleasing coin for the grade. It is well struck and lustrous with clean, vibrant surfaces.COMPARABLES: In our March 2000 auction we sold a PCGS MS63 example of this date for $17,250. In the Kingswood February 2002 sale another PCGS MS63 brought $13,800.PEDIGREE: No earlier pedigree is known than The Green Pond Collection. This is the plate coin in the second edition of the Winter book on Dahlonega gold coinage and it is listed in the revised Condition Census as tied with a small group as third finest known. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances.
