1858-D G$1 MS63 NGC. Variety 10-M (per Doug Winte
1858-D<G$1> MS63 NGC. Variety 10-M (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system; this was cataloged by Winter as Variety 10-L in his first edition). Among Type III Gold Dollars from the Dahlonega Mint, this issue has the third highest mintage, yet only 3,477 were coined. This figure easily suggests the elusive nature of this issue, and the difficulty of finding any D-Mint gold dollar of the design. The 1858-D is a rarity in Mint State grades, with just 30 examples certified by NGC in all grades from MS60 through MS66, the latter coin being the only example finer than this. All of the population figures from both NGC and PCGS are substantially higher than the actual number of coins, due to resubmissions. It is probably the case that only about a dozen or so strictly graded Mint State coins actually exist. Although certain individual design elements exhibit some weakness, this example is actually quite sharply struck, and the issue is perhaps the only well struck date of the Type III design from the Georgia facility. The surfaces are fully lustrous with brilliant yellow coloration. A small depression in the obverse field near ED is due to foreign matter on the die, and is seen to some extent on most, if not all, examples of the issue. Light clash marks are visible on the reverse, not uncommon to these gold dollars. Population: 7 in 63, 1 finer (4/05).
