1858-C $5 MS62 PCGS. Variety 26-K. The 1858-C is one of the more frequently encountered Charlotte half eagles. It is occasionally found in pleasing AU condition and a few Mint State pieces are also known. While it is "frequently encountered," that term must be understood within the context of Charlotte fives. Only 185-195 coins are believed known today in all grades, a number that is far less than collectors seeking an example from this historic Southern mint. Luster, strike, and color are usually above average for the 1858-C, and that holds true for this piece as well. The typical '58-C usually shows numerous abrasions. That is certainly not the case on this coin with the only barely noticeable abrasions (get out your magnifier) located below star 8 on the obverse, and a couple of shallow marks above the F in FIVE. The fields are semi-prooflike, a trait that several high grade 1858-C fives show. Sharply defined, the surfaces are lustrous and exude rich, original orange-gold patina. One of the few Uncirculated 1858-C fives and tied with several others as second finest known.
This piece was at one time in Stanley Elrod's # 1 Collection. That group of coins was sold privately and was not included in the Paramount or Stack's auctions of Elrod's C-mint gold.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
