1858-C $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Variety 18-J. The shining surfaces of this yellow-orange quarter eagle display strong, slightly reflective luster. Sharply struck devices, an unusual feature for a Charlotte product, only add to the immense eye appeal of the piece. While the surfaces show none of the deep cuts that often plague the issue, light, scattered abrasions are present, and a small hollow in the left reverse field may serve as a pedigree marker.
Winter (1997) acknowledges the overall availability of this issue: "The 1858-C is the most common Charlotte quarter eagle struck during the 1850s." After Charlotte struck no quarter eagles in 1857, the reaction was an oversupply in 1858, as that Mint did not produce that denomination in 1859, either. Despite its status as a "common" Charlotte gold issue, the 1858-C quarter eagle, like any other branch mint piece, becomes less and less available in finer grades, and a Select example such as the present piece is assured a place on the Condition Census. Population: 3 in 63, 0 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
