1858-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS
1858-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 18-J. It is a legitimate question to ask if Charlotte quarter eagles are ever well struck, especially after seeing examples of the 1855-C and 1856-C, which are among the worst struck issues from this mint. The collector might want to look closely at this 1858-C. It displays a razor-sharp strike with nearly full details on the obverse and reverse. The surfaces are also nice with some light ticks seen with magnification in the fields; there are no mint-made imperfections or planchet roughness, as often found on some 1858-C quarter eagles. There is a considerable amount of luster below deep natural coloration, and this is a textbook example of a gold coin that could be described as "crusty" as it has never been cleaned or dipped. While certainly not one of the rarest coins in this collection, it is clearly one of the prettiest and it is a piece that has survived today's penchant for brightening gold coins from this era. It is also choice for the grade and appears to be fully the equal of some of those called MS61 or even MS62 by today's standards. An absolutely ideal coin for the type collector seeking a single high grade Charlotte quarter eagle. Housed in an old PCGS holder.
The 1858-C is one of the two most common Charlotte quarter eagles. There are between 10 and 20 known in Uncirculated grades. The PCGS and NGC population data for Mint State coins of this date is highly inflated by resubmissions. There are three known in MS63 (all of which have been sold by Heritage at one time or another) and none finer.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
