1858-C $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Variety 18-J. Gold coinage at Charlotte declined as the 1850s progressed, since the North Carolina mines were tapped out, and West Coast gold was struck at San Francisco instead of shipped across the Panama isthmus. The 1858-C was the only C-mint issue between 1857 and 1859, and was limited to 9,056 pieces. This briefly circulated example has a smooth straw-gold appearance despite a couple of mint-made strike-throughs near the eagle. The reverse has minor translucent residue at 5 o'clock.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
