1858 ALEX. JAZET Engraved DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE of the United States
“DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE of the United States of America. July 4th, 1776” by ALEX. JAZET

October 1st, 1858-Dated, Historic Engraving titled, “DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE of the United States of America. July 4th, 1776”, by Engraver ALEX. JAZET, After the Painting by John Trumbull, Framed, Very Fine.

In 1820 painter John Trumbull commissioned Asher B. Durand to engrave his painting, The Declaration of Independence (1787-1820, at the Yale University Art Gallery) for the large commission sum of $3,000. This impressive Engraving is After both that original Trumbull painting and Asher Durand’s earlier engraved example. It measures 22.75” x 13.25” (by sight), matted and framed fully to 32.5” x 22.75”.
The Engraved Print is fully titled: “DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE of the United States of America. July 4th, 1776” presented in a simple heavy oak wooden period frame from which the print can be removed for ease of shipment. This c. 1858 period Print is on thick sheet of wove print paper which retains its original wide full-size margins, has some overall tone and slight use likely acquired during its prior framing. There was old tacking glue used to hold the print in place against the mat cover along the top margin. This is relatively minor and would not be seen when re-framed as it would be fully covered by its mat. There are minor scattered creases in this Print which shows John Trumbull’s famous painting of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. John Hancock is shown seated in the foreground as John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin present him with the Declaration for his signature. The many delegates from the other states are seated or standing around the perimeter of the room in the background. The printed text immediately below the engraved image on the margin reads: (After) “Painted by JOHN TRUMBULL - Engraved by ALEX. JAZET - PRINTED by GOUDPIL & Co. - NEW YORK Published by M. KNOSDLER - PARIS - LONDON - BERLIN Published 1st October 1858 by GOUPIL & Co.” This current example is a very historic American piece commemorating one of the proudest moments in the history of these United States.
