1858 50C Half Dollar PR67 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg-Kaufman. This stunning Superb Gem is certainly a coin that will please the connoisseur. It is an amazing Superb Gem that ranks high in the census of this date, probably the second finest known. Dave Bowers writes in the Eliasberg catalog that “it would be difficult to imagine a more aesthetically pleasing coin no matter what its technical grade might be.”
Like the other denominations, the mintage is unknown, but probably nearly the same as the smaller silver coins of this year, perhaps a couple hundred each. Total population data from third party grading services may provide a clue. It is believed that the 1858 proof half dollar is rarer than the other denominations, due to a lower mintage or a lower survival rate, probably the latter. The NGC Census Report shows the following totals for each denomination of proof 1858 silver coins: half dime (76), dime (64), quarter (60), half dollar (46), silver dollar (67). Immediately evident is the substantially lower total for the half dollar.
Carefully made dies show few identifying characteristics. The date appears to be centered in the space below the base, although it has been described as a "low date" by some past numismatic scholars. The reverse has indefinite vertical lines at the bottom of the third stripe in the shield. Two tiny spurs jut out from the rightmost element of the fifth vertical stripe. Diagonal striations can be seen within the shield and below the right facing wing, although these are faint and only visible as a result of the highly mirrored surfaces. Similar striae at the same angle appears elsewhere, especially near part of the border.
Peripheral blue, lilac, and russet toning surrounds pale champagne color over deeply mirrored proof surfaces with light cameo contrast. Every detail is boldly defined. Census: 1 in 67, 1 finer (6/07).
Ex: Chapman Brothers; J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate via Stack's (1942); Louis E.
