1858<50C> PR65 Cameo PCGS. This example is the single finest of only four Cameo proof examples certified by PCGS. It is pedigreed to the mid-1960s and remains an extremely desirable example for the Seated half dollar collector and connoisseur. In 1966, Stack's offered this as "Brilliant proof. Lovely even light golden toning. Rare!" By 1984, they had expanded their description, and upgraded the coin: "Choice Brilliant Proof. Some very faint hairlines. Splendid pale rose-russet toning. Rarely is this date seen in such a nice state of preservation." While the faint hairlines are certainly still visible, the light golden or rose-russet toning seems a little deeper after the passing of time, and the hairlines are even less evident today.
Although we can't be certain of the original proof mintage, it was long considered to be just 80 coins. The actual total production was more likely in the range of 200 to 250 pieces. Either way, this is certainly a rarity in proof format, and the present example is among the finest and most appealing of all survivors.
Ex: Maurice Bauman Collection (Stack's, 12/1966), lot 128; Lester Merkin (2/1971), lot 763; Stack's (3/1984), lot 695.
