Mintages from these early years is uncertain, but experts generally conclude that fewer than 400 proof Half Dollars were minted in 1858. Breen's estimate of 80 pieces seems a bit low based on population figures. This watery, needle sharp proof representative displays orange and cobalt-blue peripheral accents. A series of short hairline scratches to the right of the portrait and on Liberty's leg limit the grade. Population: 13 in 64, 10 finer (4/05).
